Art & Culture in New York

I will be posting about my attendance at the theatre, opera, ballet, and concerts in New York on this site. Will be working on this in tandem with my other travel sites. Music Box Theatre

Mark Rylance steals the show starting with an astonishing over half hour of monologue. David Hyde Pierce stars as Elomire, an anagram of Moliere, in this very funny faux-Moliere play. Joanna Lumley of Absolutely Fabulous fame is the patroness Princess.



WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN

Braved the first blizzard of the season to see Patty Lupone and Brian Stokes Mitchell star in this jumbled stage version of the Pedro Almodovar movie.

No matter how many times I've seen this dance troupe, I still enjoy each performance. I've seen them since the 1970s in New York and once in London and it still amazes me that I still laugh at their antics and marvel at their dancing prowess.


THE RIDE

Fun entertainment from a bus that goes around the Times Square area and up to Columbus Circle. Actors and other performers are along the bus route to entertain the passengers.

THE DIVINE SISTER

Charles Busch, in peak form, heads a terrific cast (Alison Fraser, Amy Rutberg, Jennifer Van Dyck, Jonathan Walker and Julie Halston) in a very funny send-up of wholesome '60s movies (The Trouble with Angels, The Singing Nun, His Girl Friday, Suddenly Last Summer, etc).

Strong cast with Roberto Alagna in the title role though his voice was a little off due to a cold. Ferruccio Furlanetto was expressive as Philip II; Marina Poplavskaya was Elizabeth of Valois; the superb actor/baritone Simon Keenlyside was Rodrigo; and Anna Smirnova was Eboli.

Soprano Kate Royal sang extremely well the delicate poems of Arthur Rimbaud, set to music by Benjamin Britten in his masterpiece, Les Illuminations, Op. 18. The program also included Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92 and Samuel Barber's Capricorn Concerto, Op. 21.

The Maltese tenor, Joseph Calleja (Rodolfo) has a wonderful, sweet voice. Fabio Capitanucci (Marcello), Krassimira Stoyanova (Mimi), Ellie Dehn (Musetta) and Austrian bass Günther Groisböck (Colline) were also in great voice.

William Christie's debut as conductor at he Met. Nathan Gunn was Guglielmo; Pavol Breslik was Ferrando; Miah Persson was Fiordiligi; Isabel Leonard was Dorabella; Danielle de Niese was Despina; and William Shimell was Don Alfonso.

The Latvian soprano Elina Garanča was an excellent Carmen and Brandon Jovanovich was vocally gratifying. John Relyea, last season's excellent Méphistophélès in La damnation de Faust, was Escamillo and Micaela was Nicole Cabell.

Although this performance was in Chicago, I am including it here. Great production of this dress rehearsal, directed by Renata Scotto who was very cordial when I approached her and talked to her.

Very disappointed! Charo is the only reason I wanted to see this show and she postponed her appearance in NYC. Walked out during intermission.

Verdi's Attila is produced for the first time at the Met. Also the much anticipated debut of conductor Riccardo Muti. Director Pierre Audi and designer Miucci Prada were booed; Urmana's wig was like Marge Simpson's hair; costumes had sci-fi look; starred the compelling Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov in the title role.

Unfortunately, Juan Diego Florez and Diana Damrau were both ill. Kiri Te Kanawa, in the usually non-singing role of the Duchess of Krakenthorp, sang the tune of the orchestral prelude, then a sultry rendition of Ginastera’s “Canción al Arbol del Olvido” (“Song of the Tree of Forgetting”). Lawrence Brownlee ably replaced Florez.
