Unfortunately, Juan Diego Florez and Diana Damrau were both ill. Kiri Te Kanawa, in the usually non-singing role of the Duchess of Krakenthorp, sang the tune of the orchestral prelude, then a sultry rendition of Ginastera’s “Canción al Arbol del Olvido” (“Song of the Tree of Forgetting”). Lawrence Brownlee ably replaced Florez.
